Soviet-Hungarian friendship

Similarly to the previously visited Liberation Memorial, the memorial of the Soviet-Hungarian friendship is also the work of Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl. The statue was erected in 1956 at Pataki István square (today’s Szent László square) in the 10th district of Budapest. The two figures of the monument made of bronze are approximately 2,4 metres tall and stand on a 160 centimetres-tall pedestal. There was a quote chosen by the Soviets on the original pedestal which read:

"Our thanks and gratitude to the Soviet Union that liberated our country and helps us build socialism."

Look at the statue.

  • What do the Hungarian and Soviet figures represent? What social classes do they depict?
  • Why do you think it is so?
  • In your opinion, what is the relationship between the two figures? What is the “friendship” like?
