Memento Park was established with a touristic, cultural and educational purpose. The park exhibits public monuments that had been erected between 1947 and 1988 in Budapest, and were removed from public spaces after the fall of communism in 1989. The statues were saved from demise with the establishment of the Statue Park. The park was designed by architect Ákos Eleőd: his philosophical composition opens up the space and the time period for deeper understanding and critical analysis.
The park consists of the Statue Park itself, the Witness Square, which is the first stop of this IWalk, and the surrounding buildings. The park opened its doors to the public on June 27, 1993, on the second anniversary of the withdrawal of the Soviet forces.
