Ágnes Heller was born in 1929, in Budapest. Her family’s circumstances became more and more difficult because of the anti-Jewish measures, and she lost many relatives and friends as a result of the deportations. After the war, she graduated from Eötvös Loránd University with a degree in Hungarian Literature and Philosophy. In 1948 she joined the communist party, but later she was deprived of her academic professorship, therefore she had to go abroad to teach. She taught overseas after 1977. She returned home in 1990, when she was elected as a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. She passed away in 2019, in Balatonalmádi. The interview was recorded in 1999, in Budapest, Hungary.
