In 1945, the Soviet Red Army liberated Hungary from the Nazi German occupiers and their Arrow-Cross collaborators. April 4, the Day of Liberation was a public holiday until 1989. However, the question of liberation is being disputed from many aspects even today, mainly because of the Soviet influence of more than 40 years.
