Memento Park

The concept of the Witness Square

On the longer side of the trapezoid Witness Square you can find the entrance to the Statue Park, the so-called Coulisse Wall. Opposite that, you see the replica of the boots from the former Stalin statue destroyed in 1956. The other two sides of the square accommodate auxiliary buildings hosting exhibitions as well as education and touristic projects. The original plans contained more buildings around Witness Square, but they were never finished. The word “memento” refers to an object that reminds one of something, while the Witness Square can refer to the word “eyewitness.”

Why do you think words “memento” and “witness” were used to name the park and the square?
