After World War I, Hungary desperately searched for the reason why they lost the war. Far-right and conservative political groups claimed that Jews were responsible for the loss of the war. In 1920, the Numerus Clausus was passed; this law that put quotas in place at universities to limit the number of Jewish students.
In the 1930s, during the global economic crisis known as the Great Depression, Hungarian politics shifted to the right. Hungary allied with Nazi Germany, where Hitler was in power. Rising antisemitism in Hungary, together with the German example of antisemitic laws (The Nuremberg Laws) resulted in the passing of anti-Jewish laws (1938, 1939, 1941), which excluded Hungarians of Jewish origin from economic and intellectual professions and increasingly restricted Hungarian Jews from different aspects of society.
