The 19th century was a prosperous period for the Jewish community. The Jewish population of Pest contributed significantly to Hungary's vigorous economic and industrial development. This was supported by assimilation, an important social process, which is the incorporation of the minority society into the majority society.
Assimilation can show up in different areas of life: language, dress, leniency towards religious standards, etc. Assimilated groups followed the Neolog direction of Judaism. This group was the most open-minded and liberal in religious terms. The Orthodox group disagreed with the assimilation practices and kept their traditions according to Jewish religious law.
