Éva Székely was born in 1927, in Budapest. She was an olympic champion swimmer. Éva was not allowed to train during the war because of her Jewish origins. During the Arrow-Cross regime she was taken to perform forced labour. She escaped and survived the persecutions in Budapest in a protected house along with her family. After the war, she began to swim again. She won many competitions, including a gold medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki and a silver medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. She wrote a book about her life: “Only winners are allowed to cry!" Her daughter, Andrea Gyarmathy, is pediatrician who was also a swimming champion.
