György Besnyő was born in 1919 in a religious Jewish family. His father was a shoemaker. György went to the Jewish School in Újpest. In 1940, he was taken for forced labour, first in Hungary, then in 1941 to the Sub-Carpathians in Ukraine, and in 1942 to Transylvania. In 1944, he was deported from Budapest to Bergen-Belsen. He was liberated by the US Army and returned to Budapest where he lived until his death. The interview was conducted in 2000, in Budapest, Hungary.
Edit Fekete was born in 1923, in Budapest in a Neolog Jewish family. Her parents owned a grocery store. During the Holocaust, Edit was deported to several concentration camps, including Auschwitz. She was liberated in Neustadt-Glewe by American soldiers. After the war, she started to work at the Hungarian Democratic Youth Association. She later worked in factories and offices. She had a son and daughter. The interview was conducted in 2000, in Budapest, Hungary.
