How did an urban Jewish family live?
During the 1910s, almost half of the Hungarian Jewish population lived in cities, including in Elizabethtown in Budapest. The furniture you see in this living room was typical for a middle-class family. The only objects that identify the family as Jews are the Seder plate and the Hanukiah. The Seder plate is used during Passover, when Jews remember the ancient exile from Egypt. The Hannukiah is used to celebrate Hannukah - when the Jewish Macabee’s successfully rose up against the Syrian Greeks. Other important Jewish Holidays include the Shabbat (the Sabbath; from sundown Friday until sundown Saturday); Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement).
