The Refugee Committee, HICEM and Schmolka and Steiner personally helped Jewish and political refugees from Germany, Austria and the occupied borderlands, averted deportations back that would have meant immediate imprisonment in a concentration camp, intervened on behalf of refugees trapped in the so-called no-man's land between Germany and Poland, Germany and the Second Republic of Czecho-Slovakia or between Czecho-Slovakia and Hungary.
