The town known as Auschwitz

The Kluger family: from left, Fryda holding Bronya in her arms, in front, Moses, Yitzchak and Shimon, and maid Helena with Melech on her lap (1930s).

The Kluger Family House (located behind the Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot Synagogue), was most likely constructed at the turn of the 20th century and belonged to the Wulkan, Leser, Teichner, and Kluger families in turn.

During the Holocaust, Symcha Kluger, his wife Fryda, and six of their children were murdered. Only three siblings, Szymon, Moses, and Bronia, survived.

After World War II, Bronia and Moses immigrated to the United States. Szymon settled in Sweden and worked there until 1961, at which point he returned to Oświęcim. He was the last Jew to live in Oświęcim and lived alone in his family home. Szymon died on May 26, 2000, and was buried in the Oświęcim Jewish cemetery.

The imprint of a mezuzah can be seen on the upper right part of the door to the house.
