Before World War II, the Oświęcim town square was a place of residence and commercial activity for many Jewish inhabitants of Oświęcim.

In the early spring of 1941, the Germans gathered Jewish Oświęcim residents at the town square, which was renamed Adolf-Hitler-Platz. From there, most were later sent to the gas chambers at Auschwitz.
