Serena Bayernova (née Friedman) was born on September 7, 1922 in Kosice, Czechoslovakia. Her father, Benjamin Friedman was a businessman and a rabbi, while her mother, Frida Friedman was a housewife. Serena had five siblings and was raised in an orthodox jewish family. She and her family were deported to Auschwitz in 1944. She survived a death march and several months in Taucha, a subcamp of Buchenwald concentration camp, in Germany. Only she and her brother survived the war. She returned to Kosice and worked as a civil servant and later on as a teacher. She got married in 1950 and had one daughter. The interview was recorded in 1996, in Kosice.
