By the end of 1930’s the changing balance of power in Europe created a whole new situation in the foreign policy of the region. Hungary desired to reclaim part of its territory, lost due to the Treaty of Trianon. Kosice and the southern part of today’s Slovakia was annexed to Hungary in 1938 as the outcome of the First Vienna Award, which was approved by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.
After the award on 11th November 1938 the Hungarian Army marched into Kosice under the leadership of regent Miklós Horthy. The incident was considered as a symbolic takeover, rather than a military action. Horthy arrived on a white horse, and received the key to the city here, at the Main street.
What do you think was the symbolic meaning of the organized military entry, if the First Vienna Award had already guaranteed the reannexation of Kosice?
