Following the German occupation on March 19, 1944, Jews were required to wear a distinctive sign, i.e., a yellow star. From April 27, Jews were ordered to be gathered and ghettoized. The Jews of Kosice’s surrounding villages were forced to move into the synagogues of the city, including the temple on Harang Street. In some cases, they were moved to various flats in the town, often to apartments of local relatives. Jews of Kosice and its surrounding villages were herded outside of the city center, to the final location of the ghetto, the brick factory.
Nearly 16,000 Jews were deported from the brick factory, mainly to Auschwitz.
