Dissimilation in the Czechoslovak democracy

After the Trianon treaty in 1920 Kosice became part of the democratic Czechoslovakia. The new administration treated the local Jewry as an ethnic group, just like the Hungarians, Germans, Poles or Ruthenians. They were not forced to assimilate into the now majority Czeck or Slovak society, but rather to dissimilate from the Hungarian society and consider themselves as ethnically Jewish and not as ethnically Hungarian anymore. The aim of the dissimilation was to reduce the number of ethnic Hungarians in the newly formed Chzechoslovak state.
