Jewish resistance in Nazi Vienna

Austrian Society during Nazi-Era

This photograph shows how Jewish people were forced to remove slogans after the so-called Anschluss while the local population was watching them. Local Nazi officials initiated these humiliations, and the population actively participated.

Only a minority opposed the Nazi regime. The reason for this was not only fear-mongering and terror, but also broad support for the Nazi worldview. In everyday life, the regime was able to win over large parts of the population through social promises, wartime successes and propaganda. Also because of entrenched antisemitism, many came to terms with or approved of discrimination against Jews.

The Gestapo was dependent on the participation of the non-jewish population. Therefore people who engaged in resistance had to calculate that their neighbors spy on them and backstab them.
