The "Mischlingsliga" were young people who were persecuted as “Jewish” in Vienna during the Nazis era. In response, they banded together. The name “Mischlingsliga” refers to the fact that the group members were predominantly Jewish "Mischlinge”. In the eyes of the Nazis, they had one "Jewish" parent and one "Aryan" parent. This basically protected them from deportation to an extermination camp, but they experienced antisemitic discrimination as well.
The "Mischlingsliga" was the only organized Jewish resistance group known for Vienna. It emerged from an apron organization of the Communist Youth League (KJV).
Like other resistance groups, the "Mischlingsliga" pursued the goal of overthrowing Nazi rule, for which they also distributed leaflets critical of the regime. For political education, some young women passed on banned books, which they took as forced laborers at the garbage collection point where Martin Vogel was deployed. Hoping to escape isolation within the population, young people joined this group.
By choosing the name "Mischlingsliga," members have picked up on a pejorative, racist Nazi term.
- Why do you think the young people decided to pick that name?
