Jewish resistance in Nazi Vienna

… and today? "To remember means to change“

Today, it is disputed who is publicly remembered and thus also honored. This can be seen again and again in the example of street names.

Viennese streets still bear the names of NSDAP members and antisemites. Activists of the Jewish Austrian University Students (JÖH) used the commemoration of the November Pogrom 2021 as an occasion for a protest action: They pasted street signs with the names of Jewish resistance fighters and criticized that "those who risked everything in the fight against the Nazis, as resistance fighters, opposition members and deserters, are far too little present in the cityscape”. The history of Jewish resistance - that is their goal - should be more visible.

  • What does that say about how Austrian society remembers?
  • Why do you think it is important for people today to deal with the history of their ancestors and the people who lived in a place before them?

Discuss with each other or write down your thoughts in a few sentences.
