This was the headquarters of the Youth Aliyah (JUAL), which organized Jewish emigration to Palestine ("Aliyah") during the Nazi period. About 1,300 Jewish children and young people received an immigration certificate for Palestine issued by the British Mandate power, and were thus saved.
The JUAL was also an umbrella organization of youth associations that saw Zionism as an answer to antisemitism. There was a school where children prepared for their future life in Palestine. After being expelled from public schools, this was one of the few places where Jewish children could still learn and receive lunch. This is just one example of how the Jewish community provided its members with necessities.
