One of the about 900 Gestapo employees was Othmar Trnka. Born in Vienna, he was active in German nationalist associations during the interwar period and became a policeman.
In March 1938, he decided to join the Austrian State Police, from where he was transferred to the Gestapo. As a Gestapo officer, he was responsible for arrests, mistreatment and executions of resistance fighters and was even promoted because of his supposed success.
In the post-war period, he was sentenced to lenient sentences in two People's Court trials and was able to benefit from an amnesty for Nazi perpetrators in 1957. He received a pension for his work with the Gestapo.
Contrast Othmar Trnka's fate during the postwar period with his behavior during the Nazi era. What do you think about it? Write down some thoughts.
