The Jewish Community in Ostrava resumed its activities after 1945 and still exists today.
However, the hopes of most of the returnees for a free life were ended by the communist coup in 1948.
The bold plans for the construction of a new synagogue and community centre, prepared by Elly Oehler-Sonnenschein, the author of the pre-war modernist reconstruction of the Main Synagogue, remained an unfulfilled dream. She preferred to change her own name to the Czech-sounding Olárová and moved to Prague where she soon died in 1953 as a result of the hardships of the war.
The picture shows a visualisation of the street facade of the planned Jewish community centre on the site of the destroyed synagogue in Žerotínova Street, 1948.
The photograph comes from the collections of the Jewish Museum in Prague.
