The Main Synagogue in Ostrava was burnt down on the night of 13 June 1939, after which its ruins were demolished.
Thus it was the last destroyed synagogue on the territory of today's Ostrava: the synagogue in Vítkovice was set on fire on 24 May and finally burnt down on the night of 4 June 1939, the synagogue in Zábřeh was burnt down on the night of 7 June, the synagogue in Přívoz was set on fire on the night of 9 June and the synagogue in Hrušov burnt down on the night of 11 June. The Orthodox synagogue in Ostrava was burnt down on the night of 12 June.
The destruction of the prayer houses and other buildings representing the Jewish presence was only the beginning of a campaign culminating in an effort to murder all persons identified as Jews and to erase any reminders of their existence.
In your opinion, did the Nazis succeed in erasing reminders of the existence of Jewish residents from the memory of the city of Ostrava?
