Brief biography of the Witness

Artur Radvanský was born on 24 November 1921 in Ostrava, his original name was Tüberger. He grew up in Radvanice.

From his youth, he was a member of the Zionist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair and helped refugees from Nazism. Later he became involved in the organization of illegal escapes from the occupied republic across the then Czechoslovak-Polish border. When he and his father attempted to escape by the same route, they were detained after crossing the state border in Poland and interned in several prisons and concentration camps.

Artur then survived also the concentration camps of Buchenwald, Auschwitz, Ravensbrueck, Sachsenhausen and Mauthausen. He was liberated when in the Ebensee concentration camp.

After the war, he changed his name when people were speaking ill of him confusing him with a German because of his name. In the 1960s, he was an important witness in the trials of war criminals, and after his retirement he devoted himself to educating young people about the history of the Holocaust, especially in Germany. He published a memoir about his experiences during the war shortly before his death. He died in November 2009.
