We will start our walk at the place where Ostrava's Main Synagogue used to stand.

The synagogue is the centre of life in every Jewish community. This was also the case in Ostrava. The Main Synagogue in the city centre was inaugurated on 15 September 1879. It had its own choir and organ, and its progressive conception was a clear signal of the integration of Jews into the majority society.

Behind the synagogue, with its main entrance on today's Sokolská Avenue, the administrative building of the Ostrava Jewish Community stood from the beginning of the twentieth century.
