In the Footsteps of Ostrava Jews

Instructions to the Deportees

Instructions in German, issued by the Jewish community in Ostrava.

On the basis of Adolf Eichmann's order, the Jewish Community had to arrange the deportation technically, financially and organizationally.

The text reads: "All Jewish men who have registered for voluntary retraining and who do not have all or part of the equipment listed in the leaflet of 12 October, must report to the offices of the Jewish Religious Community on Saturday, 14 October. They must bring a list of items they are missing which will be assigned to them after the inspection, if possible."

What follows is a list that enumerates the outfit ranging from one suitcase, warm shirts, underwear and woolen stockings to towels, handkerchiefs, cleaning rags, one pair of shoes and earmuffs, woolen blankets and woolen gloves. Some of the items on the original list, such as dishes and kerosene lamps, were omitted because they were not available to the Jewish Community.

The photograph comes from the collections of the Jewish Museum in Prague.
