In the Footsteps of Ostrava Jews

Liberators

Ostrava was liberated, together with the units of the 4th Ukrainian Front of the Red Army, by the 1st Czechoslovak Independent Tank Brigade, part of the so-called Svoboda’s Army, the Czechoslovak foreign army on the Eastern Front.

Nádražní Street is commemorated as the place where the tanks entered Ostrava with the Czechoslovak flag proudly flying. According to witnesses, Czechoslovak and Soviet tanks advanced along Nádražní Street and today's 30. dubna Street until they reached the New Town Hall.

In the photo, you can see the welcoming of the first tank of the liberators on Nádražní Street.
