After the introduction of anti-Jewish legislation during the Protectorate and the exclusion of Jewish pupils from other schools, the school building and especially its yard became one of the last places where Jewish youth could feel free.
Theatre performances, which were forbidden to Jews, were staged in the school, and various sports matches were held in the school yard after the young people returned from their forced labor occupation. The schoolyard thus replaced parks, sports grounds and other public spaces inaccessible to Jews.
The photographs of the school come from the collections of the Jewish Museum in Prague.
