The Jewish theatre scene in Vienna and Europe fell victim to the Nazi reign of terror. Soon after Nazi Germany annexed Austria, the theater was “Aryanized,”meaning that it was confiscated and taken from the Jewish owners. A non-Jewish an industrialist family obtained the building. In the 1950s there was an out-of-court restitution procedure. The building was no longer used as a theatre, but as a cinema and later turned into a supermarket.
During renovations of the building in the 1990s the old theater hall was rediscovered and the spaces were repurposed for cultural activities. In 2009 the “Theatre Nestroyhof / Hamakom” was reopened. Today, it is once again an integral part of the Vienna theatre scene.
