Around 3000 Jews from Sopron were deported to Auschwitz, as this was the collection point for deportations for all the Jews from the county. The sculpture shows the wall outside the gas chamber. Coats with the Star of David hanging on the wall and shoes, dolls, toys and glasses scattered hastily on the floor below. The letters rising like smoke are words of the Shma Yisrael prayer. Shma Yisrael, the most important prayer of the Jews was first recited by Moses. It is found in the Torah (the first five books of Moses), in the sixth chapter of Deuteronomy: Listen, Israel: the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.
The text on the fence reads "Blessed be the memory of the righteous" in Hebrew.
