Read more about the history of the local Jewish community.
The expelled Jewish population began to move back to the city in the 1810s, after almost 300 years. They were 37 in 1837, and by 1869 the population had grown to almost 900. The first Jewish school was established in 1852. The Jewish community in Hungary split into several branches in 1868, with the neologists emphasizing modernity and integration into Hungarian society, and the use of the Hungarian language, while the orthodox emphasized adherence to Jewish traditions. The neolog synagogue and the school building were erected here, in 1876.
