In the footsteps of the Jews of Sopron

The history of the synagogue

Read the information about the synagogue.

The New Synagogue was built in 1350, about 50 years later than the Old synagogue. It consists of a single room, which served as the prayer hall. The Torah cabinet can be found under the windows in the eastern wall, and the bimah, platform of the Torah reading table, has been reconstructed in the middle of the space. No separate women's synagogue was built here, the women observed the service through the latticed window to the right under the gable of the residential building.

In 2014, on the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust, an exhibition entitled ‘Forgotten People of Sopron’ was opened in the synagogue building. This exhibition presented the history of the city's Jewish community and their persecution during the Holocaust.
