In the footsteps of the Jews of Sopron

The synagogue

Read the information about the synagogue.

The orthodox community was founded in 1873 by forty-eight members of the former Jewish community. Manó Grünwald was elected rabbi in the year of its foundation. The community grew rapidly and institutions serving the community, such as a Talmud Torah school, a ritual bath, a matza house and a yeshiva, were established and can still be seen in the old schoolhouse on the Paprét side.

During the Second World War, the ghetto was established in and around this building. On June 29, 1944, 1600 Jews from Sopron and other ghettos were forced into the Jacobi factory. Jews were already deported here from Csorna, Kapuvár and Beled. The people were herded from the factory to Sopron’s Déli (Southern) railway station, and the wagons were sent to Auschwitz on July 5, 1944. 1885 people were deported from Sopron.

A plaque on the wall of the building commemorates the tragedy.
