Read more about the history of the local Jewish community.

The situation of the Jews of Sopron deteriorated increasingly in the periods following the Árpád dynasty. They came into conflict with the large German population living in Sopron, and were branded as collaborators with the Turks as a result of the propaganda of the time. In 1526, in the year of the Battle of Mohács, the people of Sopron resorted to a trick to drive the Jews out of the city in just an hour. The mayor told the lie to Queen Mary (the widow of King Louis II) that the Jews wanted to leave the town. The Queen allowed the Jews to leave and, in possession of this document, the mayor ordered the Jews to leave the city. Their houses left behind and the synagogue were ransacked and looted. The Jews of Sopron moved to the surrounding settlements, to Kismarton, Nagymarton and Kabold. According to sources, Sopron suffered serious damage from the exile of the Jews.
