Traces of Jewish presence in Vinohrady

Franz Kafka and the Vinohrady Synagogue

Eduard Wohryzek, the shames (sexton) of the Vinohrady synagogue, was born in Zájezdec near Chrudim. Wohryzek ́s impoverished family with four children moved to a service flat immediately after the completion of the synagogue; his wife Mina worked as a cashier for the Jewish community. One of the daughters, Julie, made acquaintance with Franz Kafka at the beginning of 1919 and became his second fiancée. The engagement was cancelled a short time before the intended wedding.

Do you think Franz Kafka ever stood in the place where you are standing today?
