Viktor Schwarz discusses his religious identity and describes the life of one of the Jewish businessmen of Vinohrady. The nearby Tylovo square used to be the main square of Vinohrady, its business and social center, where the first Jewish school and the first two synagogues were located.
The shop of Max Langer is mentioned in this clip. Max Langer was the vice-president of the Vinohrady Jewish Benevolent Society for many years. He never lost belief in the assimilation of Jews within the Czech nation, not even during the wave of pogroms that shook Vinohrady at the end of 1897. His sons attended lessons of Jewish religion in school, but they considered themselves as Czechs. The most famous of his sons was the Czech playwright František Langer.
