The Touch of Otti Berger - a Virtual IWalk

In London

Otti Berger also travelled to Holland where she made colourful and innovative textiles. She was in serious financial difficulties now in Germany and 1935-36 were particularly challenging and she had to take out loans.

In 1937, Otti traveled to England, arriving in London on February 15th. As there was interest in her work, she officially left Germany in May 1937 to settle in England. By Christmas 1937 Otti Berger was living in London and sent Christmas cards printed on textile shown above. She worked for Helios in Bolton near Manchester and squares of her textile samples survive.
She met and spent time with several Bauhaus colleagues, but many were already emigrating from England and the continent to the United States, where they were trying to establish a new Bauhaus in Chicago.
