Jaroslav Kraus was born in 1922 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. According to the Nazi laws, he was born from a so-called “mixed marriage.”
He survived the Terezín ghetto and the Auschwitz-Birkenau, Buchenwald and Meuselwitz camps. At the end of the war, he escaped from a transport. His story became the basis for the Diamonds of the Night novel and film.
