Watch a clip of Anna Weiss's testimony, in which she explains why she moved to Ústí and what problems she faced after the German annexation while fleeing Ústí.
Anna Weiss was born in January 1911 in Graz, Austria, where her father was a professor of pharmacology and dean of the medical faculty. She herself graduated from Charles University in Prague, and after her marriage she moved to Ústí nad Labem, where her first daughter was born.
After the annexation of the border region, the family fled to Prague. After a rather complicated journey, using visa promises to various exotic countries, the family finally managed to leave Europe in time. They settled in the United States.
The interview was recorded on October 22, 1996 in Bethesda, Maryland, U.S.A.
Why did the Czechoslovak authorities return Jewish refugees from Nazism, such as Anna Weiss, back to the ceded territory?
