Remembering the Jewish inhabitants of Klíše

A girl named Johana

Watch a clip of testimony of Jeanne Kiester, who grew up in this house.

**Jeanne Kiester **was born in February 1929 as Johana Tauberová. She had an older brother Jiří, and the family lived in Ústí nad Labem. After the annexation of the border region, the family fled to Prague and began looking for ways to leave Europe. Because of her escape from the Nazis, Johana missed a planned spinal operation and suffered the consequences until her death.

The Taubers managed to obtain an invitation, supported by money, from relatives in America, as well as the necessary permits from the authorities and the Gestapo. They left for the USA and settled in Saint Louis, where in the post-war period they continued to encounter prejudice not only against Jews but also against immigrants as such.

The interview was recorded on May 9, 1996 in West Hills, California, U.S.A.

How was Johana's childhood different from yours? Answer in the box below this question.
