On December 3, 1946, the Waněks applied to retain their Czechoslovak citizenship. They were exempt from deportation, but not from the reach of anti-German decrees. Their original citizenship was restored to them only in April 1949.
Walter studied chemistry, Eva became a health and hospital nurse. Helena died in 1953, at the age of only fifty-one. Josef survived her by only three years.
