Despite his war experience, the Heller family received ration cards for Germans, modeled on the Protectorate ration cards for Jews. Herbert, as a former Jewish prisoner of the Nazi regime, tried to resolve the matter; in 1946 he joined the association of former political prisoners, and a year later he became a member of the Jewish religious community in Děčín. It was there that he discovered that there were many similarly affected "non-Aryan" survivors in the border region.
In January 1948, the Hellers lived at Jetřichovice 65, Herbert was still unemployed and unemployable, his wife Hilda, as a German, was called up for forced labor.
