Mauthausen Memorial: Vestiges of the Past

Strenuous dedication

In the clip you will watch Simon Wiesenthal talk about his early work after the war for the War Crimes Office and his personal mission. Immediately after the liberation of Mauthausen he began to collect information on the camps.

Read Simon’s biography before watching the video.

Simon Wiesenthal was born in Buczacz (Galicia, now Ukraine) in 1908. As an Austrian-Hungarian Jew he was sent to forced labour and concentration camps. Simon survived five camps and was liberated by the US Army in Mauthausen. After the war, he dedicated his life to tracking down and prosecuting Nazi perpetrators--a purpose for which he founded the Jewish Historical Documentation Centre. This interview was conducted by the USC Shoah Foundation in 1997.
