Mauthausen Memorial: Vestiges of the Past

The commandant’s offices

From your position, as you overlook the SS garage courtyard, you can likely see the “Stabsgebäude,” the commandant’s offices. This house was built in 1942/43, replacing the formerly wooden structure with stone. It housed the camp commander’s office and his official residence, and it also operated as the headquarters of the high command.
