These are two testimonies from men who used to live close to the concentration camp when they were teenagers.

Erich talks about the crematoria in Mauthausen. First, he recounts a time when corpses were brought to the public crematorium in the nearby city of Steyr. Then he goes on to describe the time when the Nazis started burning the dead in the concentration camp of Mauthausen. The “Green Henry” he mentions is old Austrian slang for a police prisoner transport bus.

Karl describes events taking place in 1944, when bodies were burnt in Mauthausen concentration camp day and night.

Start by reading the short biographies of Erich and Karl below.

Erich Neumüller was born in Upper Austria in 1931. He grew up close to Mauthausen concentration camp. From his parents flat, Erich could see prisoner transports on their way from the train station to the camp. After the war, he was involved in community politics in Mauthausen. This also included accompanying visitors at Mauthausen Memorial. This interview was conducted in 2010.

Karl Sigl was born in Mauthausen in 1928. He grew up close to the concentration camp and met prisoners as they marched to the campsite. This interview was conducted in 2011.
