Mauthausen Memorial: Vestiges of the Past

Searching for traces: a stone bench

From here to the edge of the quarry lies the International Memorial Park.

During the time of the concentration camp, barracks for the SS-guards stood on each of these terraces. The SS had living quarters, administration and leisure facilities set up here. With the exception of the commandant’s offices, all of these buildings were torn down shortly after the war.

Look at the historical photograph taken between 1940 and 1944 by the Erkennungsdienst.

The bench the two SS men are sitting on still exists. Find it and examine the object.
