Hidden children, survivors of the Holocaust in Brussels

Michel in hiding

Thanks to his father’s employer—the Peltzer family, owners of the Galerie National in front of which you are currently standing—Michel’s parents were able to send him to a holiday camp in the Ardennes. This camp was owned by the Peltzer family. As a result, unlike many other hidden children, Michel received food and instruction, and he even had some freedom to play with other children there. During this time, his father, who was part of the resistance, along with his mother, was arrested in front of the Galerie Nationale one day after work. Due to their Hungarian passport, they were not arrested as Jews but as political prisoners and were sent to Buchenwald and Ravensbrück, respectively.

Watch how Michel remembers the separation from his parents.
