Hidden children, survivors of the Holocaust in Brussels

House of European History

In Belgium, as in many parts of Europe, numerous Jewish children faced unimaginable challenges during Nazi persecution. Some concealed their true identities and led double lives, while others were hidden away, often separated from their parents, as a means of survival.

During this IWalk we invite you to reflect on the resilience of the human spirit, through the stories of the Jewish “hidden children” who survived the Holocaust. You will watch excerpts of testimonies of four such hidden children: Michel Fried, Sonia Kurland, Helene Grubair-Hermantin, and Gilbert Pogany. Their stories will lead you through the streets and a segment of Brussels’ history.

The development of this IWalk was funded by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). It was launched for International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2024 and the Holocaust Remembrance Conference 2024 in Brussels, which was co-organized by the IHRA, the European Commission, and the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union with support from the House of European History Brussels.
