Hidden children, survivors of the Holocaust in Brussels

Long-term impact

Unlike Helene, Michel, and Gilbert, Sonia spent the end of the war in hiding together with her younger sister. She explained that being with her sister provided a source of reassurance that helped her ease the trauma of being separated from the rest of the family. Many other testimonies from hidden children during the war confirmed this feeling.

Take some time to reflect on what you have learned about young children being in hiding and being separated from their families.

  • What do you think could be the long-term effects of such experiences for the children and their families? You can consider the social, emotional, or psychological impact.
